Jason Dawes

Name: Jason Dawes
Died: August 4, 2003
Age at death: 10
Cause of death: Suffocation
Location: New South Wales, Australia

Jason, diagnosed with autism at 18 months, was killed by his mother. After killing him, Jason’s mother tried to kill herself. She was found guilty of manslaughter.

Jason was consistently denied services for his autism. His mother’s lawyer argues that because he did not have twenty hours per week of early intervention, Jason was “doomed”. Jason’s mother had depression and believed there was “no hope for [her] son”.

However, Jason’s father explains that Jason had been learning steadily, and was communicating through sign boards.

Jason’s mother served no jail time for his death.
