Name: Denis Maltez
Died: May 23, 2007
Age at death: 12
Cause of death: Serotonin syndrome from overmedication; restraint
Location: Hialeah, Florida, USA
On the day he died, Denis, who lived in a group home, called his mother and sister. He chatted with his sister about Powerpuff Girls. The last thing he told his mother was, "I love you."
Denis was heavily medicated with the highest adult-level doses of several powerful psychotropics, even though he weighed only 70 pounds. His psychiatrist, who saw him only twice but described him as "hyper, needy, pesty", prescribed two antipsychotics, a mood stabilizer, and a tranquilizer, without the consent of Denis's mother. Denis was so overmedicated that he regularly slept through class.
Staff took Denis to get a haircut. On the way there, they restrained him, face down, with his hands behind his back. Denis died. Medical examiners found that he had serotonin syndrome, a dangerous condition caused by overmedication, in which the brain is flooded with serotonin. He likely died from a combination of serotonin syndrome and stress during restraint.
