Name: Mohammad Usmad Chaudhry.
Died: March 25, 2008.
Age at death: 21.
Cause of death: Police shooting.
Location: Hollywood, California, USA.
Mohammad, a 21-year-old Pakistani American, often went out to walk at night. It was 4 a.m., and Mohammad had gone to lie down behind some bushes when two police officers approached him. He chatted with them politely, handing over his ID. Shortly thereafter, a police officer shot him in the head, killing him instantly.
Mohammad’s mother explained that her son was the sort of man who would have instinctively complied with the police, but would become frightened and freeze if someone yelled at him loudly.
The police officer who shot Mohammad claimed that the young man had lunged at him with a knife. But the knife he turned in did not have Mohammad’s DNA on it, and the officer’s partner did not see Mohammad holding a knife or attacking the officer. Mohammad’s family alleges that the officer planted the knife.
Mohammad’s family won a lawsuit against his killer, who is now an ex-cop.
