Name: William Beals
Died: May 19, 2009
Age at death: 19
Cause of death: Drowning
Location: Detroit, Michigan, USA
William Beals was attending a tech center where people with developmental disabilities could learn job skills. He was a good swimmer, and one evening was at the center pool. He swam to the deep end, sank, and did not resurface.
His fellow students tried to get the lifeguard’s attention, but he was throwing a ball and talking to girls. Finally William’s classmates pulled him out of the pool. They and the lifeguard started CPR, but it was too late; William had died.
A fellow student’s blog mentioned that William had had a seizure and drowned. A memorial photo was put up and decorated with roses, and the students wrote their goodbyes on a poster.
William’s parents are suing the lifeguard, whose inattention may have led to the delay in rescue and resuscitation that resulted in William’s death.
