Age at death: 19
Cause of death: Internal bleeding
Location: Petaling Jaya, Malaysia
Brian, who had cerebral palsy in addition to autism, was staying at a shelter for the mentally disabled. Sometimes when his family visited him, he was bruised, but the caregivers claimed that he had fallen.
When he had been at the center for five months, Brian’s family got a call that he was having difficulty breathing and asked his caretakers to take him to the hospital, but instead they demanded that Brian’s family come and take him themselves–but by the time they arrived at the shelter, Brian was dead.
At the post-mortem, it was discovered that Brian had been badly beaten and raped, and had died of his injuries. At the center, police found a metal rod they believe might have been used to beat Brian.
One of the workers at the center was charged with murder, and the center was closed. The worker was later sentenced to only 6 years after pleading guilty to a lesser charge. He admitted he had beaten Brian because Brian didn’t want to eat his breakfast.
