Nicholas Pesare

Nicholas PesareName: Nicholas John Pesare
Died: June 30, 2011
Age at death: 18
Cause of death: Gunshot
Location: Largo, Florida, USA

Details:
18-year-old Nick Pesare had a long history of depression. He had often been hospitalized, and had been suicidal.

On the day of his death, Nick had an argument with his mother because he wanted to move back to Rhode Island from Florida. He became upset and told his mother that he wanted to die. As she had once before, his mother called police, hoping that they would take her son to a mental hospital for treatment. Nick told his mother that he would force the police to kill him by attacking them with a knife.

When the police came and met Nick's mother outside the house, they would not let her go into the house to help her son calm down, even though she told them repeatedly that her son would never harm her. Instead, police barged into the house, cornered Nick in his bedroom, tried to shoot him with a taser, and then when he reached for a folding knife on his bedside table, shot him three times in the chest and abdomen. One of the bullets hit Nick's heart, and he died at the scene.

Nick's mother remarked, ""Why would you shoot a kid that's 5-foot-3, 118 pounds?… Why would you shoot a small kid like that in the chest?"

  2. I’m sorry about your loss; you just don’t expect to lose a friend when they are only 18. I agree; it was a situation that could easily have been defused. The officers were untrained, thoughtless, ruthless, or all three.
