Name: Rasheen Rose.
Died: August 6, 2012.
Age at death: 33.
Cause of death: Crushed during restraint.
Location: Queens, New York City, New York, USA.
Details:
When Rasheen was ten years old, his parents died, and he was sent to live in a care facility. His older sister remembers him as “a nice, kind person”.
Twenty-three years later, Rasheen was still living in full-time care. He didn’t like people invading his personal space, but several people restrained Rasheen anyway, including a large man who sat on his chest. Rasheen tried to communicate by pointing to the bathroom, where he would often take a shower to relax. But they ignored him, and Rasheen died of the injuries they caused.
The death has been ruled a homicide, and Rasheen’s sister is suing the facility. After she filed the lawsuit, the facility sent her a bill for over $11 million for her brother’s care.
Rasheen’s sister won a $2.15 million settlement, but no one has been criminally prosecuted for Rasheen’s death.
