Name: Raashanai Coley
Died: September 6, 2014
Age at death: 11
Cause of death: Fatal child abuse; malnutrition
Location: Waukegan, Illinois, USA
Raashanai was the oldest of three siblings. When she was eight, a neighbor called the police saying she had heard Raashanai crying. Raashanai had the courage to tell the police officer that her stepfather had been hitting her. The stepfather was arrested, but Raashanai was left with her mother, and that wasn't any better. At ten years old, Raashanai was pulled out of school by her mother, isolating her, and the abuse grew worse. She was locked in a closet with only a sink and fed only a bowl of cereal a day.
Raashanai weighed 55 pounds when she died. She had been hit in the stomach and, her injury left untreated for three days, died of her wounds. Raashanai's siblings survived and were taken away from her mother, who was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to 43 years in prison.
