As a little boy, Carl loved sprinklers, and he was always carrying a sprinkler; he might even sleep with one.
As an adult, he was remembered for his ever-present smile and his tendency to make friends wherever he went. He lived with his mother but went shopping to Game Stop, Home Depot, and Wal-Mart daily.
Carli, his sister, says his autism was a gift to the family, and was “..what made him our Carl.”
A group of teenagers followed Carl home from Wal-mart, intending to steal his car. They believed he was “a soft target” because he was autistic. During the attempt to steal the car, they shot and killed him.
Two Florida Congressmen have drafted a proposal to rename a state law, one dealing with penalties for crimes against people with disabilities. The law would be renamed “Carl’s Law”, in honor of Carl Starke.
