Hun Joon Lee

Name: Hun Joon “Paul” Lee
Died: September 18, 2015
Age at death: 19
Cause of death: Left in a hot school bus all day
Location: Whittier, California, USA

Details:
Hun Joon Lee, called Paul by his family and friends, attended Sierra Vista Adult school for its transition program for young adults with special needs. He was his mother’s youngest child. His family described him as a “very happy boy”.

He liked drawing and watching “a Korean cartoon about a baby dinosaur”. He was an extrovert who liked the movie Toy Story and listened to Christian music.

His classmates and teachers remember how much he enjoyed learning how to wash cars during work training, and recall his lip-synced Elvis impersonation for a school talent show.

On the last day of his life, his mother saw him off onto the bus in the morning. Paul was found dead on the school bus that afternoon. He had been left there all day in the 90-degree weather, and died in the heat. The bus driver had been preoccupied with going to meet his girlfriend, and left Paul in the bus to die while he and a co-worker had sex.

Paul’s family says that Paul, who was non-verbal, would have waited on the bus for someone to tell him what to do next. When no one did, he would simply have stayed where he was.

His family, teachers, and classmates held a candelight vigil for him.
