Lacey lived with her parents. She attended school until the ninth grade, and then was home-schooled.

Her parents say that she refused to leave the couch and had severe anxiety; but she had her last medical appointment more than a decade before she died. Her parents say they considered getting a commitment order, but nothing was ever done to help her.

Lacey’s body was found sitting on a filthy couch at home. She had multiple pressure sores and infections, was underweight, and tested positive for Covid-19. According to the coroner who ruled her death a homicide, she had suffered “at least a decade of neglect”.

Edward Ware

Details:
Edward lived in a group home. While he was on the phone with his father, he said he wanted to leave. Staff restrained him, suffocating him, as Edward tried to apologize. Edward died in the hospital the next day.

The group home staff were charged with manslaughter.

Dustin Paradis

Details:
Dustin lived at a homeless shelter when he had a fight with another resident. Staff called the police, who fatally shot Dustin. The other resident was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say Dustin was holding a knife, but Dustin’s family and neighbors say they should have tried to defuse the incident without killing Dustin. “He needed help,” a neighbor says, “…but nobody was helping him.”

Richard Wix Jr.

Details:
Richard’s body was found in his home, where he lived with his father, about a week after his death. The home itself was in such bad shape that it was condemned; Richard’s father was arrested on suspicion of having fatally neglected or abused him. Officials say he “did not seek appropriate medical attention” for Richard.

Eric Liao

Name: Eric Liao.
Died: September 9, 2021.

Cause of death: Restraint-related.
Location: Omaha, Nebraska, USA.

Details:
Eric had a meltdown at a bowling alley and bit his caregiver. Staff at the bowling alley pinned him down and called police. Only when police had already handcuffed Eric did they notice he was unresponsive; and by then, it was too late. Eric was dead on arrival at the hospital.
