Malachi Lawson

A small boy with thick glasses, front teeth missing, hair in cornrows, wearing a soccer shirt.Name: Malachi Lawson.
Died: August 4, 2019.
Age at death: 4.
Cause of death: Fatal abuse (burned with hot water).
Location: Baltimore, Maryland, USA.

Malachi loved Paw Patrol and Mickey Mouse. He liked dancing and his favorite color was blue. He had been taken into foster care, but returned to his mother and stepmother. He was suspected to be on the autism spectrum, and walked with a limp because of a fractured thighbone from when he was a baby.

Malachi’s mother and her partner initially reported him missing. Later, they admitted they had burned him by making him sit in a bathtub full of hot water after he had a potty-training accident. His body was found in a dumpster.

Dante Mullinix

Photo of Dante Mullinix, a small boy with a mop of curly blond hair, wearing an orange polo shirt and looking at the camera.Name: Dante Mullinix.
Died: September 15, 2018.
Age at death: 2.
Cause of death: Abuse (Head injury, strangulation).
Location: Hershey, Pennsylvania, USA.

Dante was a happy baby. He had a developmental delay; he hadn’t yet learned to walk, and had difficulty chewing and swallowing. He could say a few words, like “ew” and “yeah”, but was generally nonverbal. He was being evaluated for autism.

His aunt called him “Monkey Man” because he had a favorite blanket with a monkey on it which he carried everywhere. Before he went to sleep, he rubbed his face against his blanket.

Dante’s mother left him with her boyfriend, who was arrested and charged with murder. Dante was brought to the hospital, unresponsive, with bruises, a compressed neck, and a brain injury, and died a few days later.

Tamira Billingslea

Photo of Tamira Billingslea, a toddler girl with dark-brown skin and black hair in braids decorated with pink beads. She is wearing a colorful sweater, and eating chips from a bag of Doritos.Name: Tamira Billingslea.
Died: July 9, 2018.
Age at death: 3.
Cause of death: Neglect (Left unsupervised; drowned).
Location: Valparaiso, Indiana, USA.

When Tamira went missing, her mother waited more than an hour before she called the police. Tamira was found drowned in a pond.

She loved TV, McDonald’s, and chicken nuggets and fries, and she gave kisses only to her father.

Editor’s note: I consider this a borderline case. Tamira’s mother is African-American, and among American blacks, waiting an hour or more before calling the police is not unsurprising. However, an hour’s delay before calling the police to help find a three-year-old could very well have sealed the little girl’s fate. Tamira’s mother was charged with neglect of a dependent.

Je’Hyrah Daniels

Name: Je’Hyrah Daniels.
Died: June 22, 2018.
Age at death: 4.
Cause of death: Murder (Drowned in the river).
Location: Tampa, Florida, USA.

Je’Hyrah’s neighbors remember that her mother was often negligent. Je’Hyrah was allowed to walk barefoot near broken glass; she was often left alone at home, and strangers came and went from their apartment. A Child and Family Services case had been opened, but closed for lack of evidence of mistreatment.

Two days after the DCFS decided Je’Hyrah was safe, Je’Hyrah’s mother stole a car from a dealership and used it to drive them to the Hillsborough River. She picked up the little girl and walked into the water as Je’Hyrah struggled and screamed for help. When she reached deep water, she tossed Je’Hyrah into the river and walked away.

Bystanders called the police, and Je’Hyrah was found by divers less than a half hour later; but she had drowned and could not be resuscitated.
