Died: April 10, 2021.
Age at death: 17.
Cause of death: Murder (Stabbed).
Location: Sydenham, South East London, England, UK.

Details:
Levi was a quiet, well-mannered boy. Self-conscious due to alopecia (hair loss), he didn’t often go out; but he had befriended a neighbor who had had multiple strokes, and once saved her life with first aid. He didn’t want to put up a tent in the yard because he was afraid of damaging his mother’s plants. He wanted to go to the Caribbean and build a family home there.

Levi had nerve damage in his leg, so he walked with a crutch. His mother thinks that this may have made him look like an “easy target” to his assailants when one of them ran him over with her car and the other stabbed him to death.

School photo of a boy with dark skin and very short hair, wearing a black T-shirt.Name: Karreon Walter-Franks.
Died: November 27, 2020.
Age at death: 15.
Cause of death: Neglect (Starvation, pneumonia).
Location: Vancouver, Washington, USA.

Karreon lived with two siblings and his aunt and uncle. His aunt had legally adopted the children.

At the time of his death, Karreon was known to the child welfare system. His aunt reported to social workers that Karreon and his siblings had been starved for years and had to steal food to survive, and that Karreon was emaciated and had collapsed from hunger. His brother told them that Karreon’s mother had hit him with a cane for throwing up. The last contact by child welfare to the home was only a week before Karreon died. His death was reported as pneumonia; but the funeral home contacted police because his body weighed only 65 pounds and was in very poor condition.

After his death, Karreon’s two younger siblings were removed from the home. His adoptive mother and uncle are under investigation, but currently not charged with anything.

Sam Koets

Photo of a smiling boy in a helmet. His arms are tied to his side with straps.Name: Sam Koets.
Died: March 28, 2019.
Age at death: 16.
Cause of death: Neglect/Abuse (Drowned while tied up and unsupervised near pool).
Location: Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA.

Details:
Sam was made to live in the family’s unfinished basement, in horrible conditions. He died when his father left him alone, hands tied, near the family’s pool on a cold spring day. A little while later, he texted Sam’s thirteen-year-old sister, asking her to check on Sam. She sent back a photo of Sam, wading chest-deep in the pool, which was so cold it had ice floating on top. Sam’s father, however, did nothing to help Sam; he did not call emergency services, attempt to return home, or contact anyone but Sam’s thirteen-year-old sister who was watching Sam die in front of her eyes. Sam’s body was found floating in the icy pool; he had been dead at least an hour.

The family had been under child protective services’ supervision for some time. Sam’s father knew perfectly well that Sam could not be left unsupervised around water, especially not with his hands tied; yet he left for work, leaving Sam alone. He was charged with manslaughter and child abuse. Sam’s thirteen-year-old sister was taken into foster care.

Sam’s father pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was given a 2-15 year sentence, and his mother was given 21 days in jail for refilling Sam’s Ritalin prescription after he died.
