Patrick had Down syndrome and autism and lived with his parents. He attended a day center where carers described Patrick as “a loving, private man”, who enjoyed swimming and going to a local coffee shop.

After a day during which he listened to the same Elton John CD repeatedly, his mother drugged him with sleeping pills and suffocated him with a plastic bag.

Two weeks after Patrick died, his 70-year-old father also died, of natural causes–diagnosed as a heart attack, probably simple grief.

Patrick’s mother claimed that she killed him because she did not receive help from social service agencies. She received a two-year suspended sentence, walking free from the courtroom.
