Name: Tia Ann Jones
Died: February 18, 2013
Age at death: 12
Cause of death: Medical neglect
Location: Cleveland, Ohio, USA
Tia was nine months old when she was adopted. She grew up as an only child in a churchgoing family. She had ADHD and autism.
When Tia stopped breathing, her mother called emergency services, and that was the first indication that Tia's life had not been as it seemed. She died of a staph infection in her feet that had been left untreated so long that it spread to her lungs, causing fatal pneumonia–an infection that had to have been present for more than a month.
The medical examiner observed that had scars and bruises all over her body. And she had not been to see a doctor in four years–even though her mother had seen a doctor for a cold while Tia was at home fighting the infection that ultimately killed her.
Now Tia's adoptive parents are being tried for child abuse, involuntary manslaughter, and child endangerment. The prosecutor told the jury that "Tia’s parents clung to the idea of the perfectly coiffed little girl, and denied the special needs child they ultimately ended up with."
