Shellay was badly neglected by her parents. At age seven, she had never been to school. Locked in a filthy back room at her parents’ house, Shellay starved, without medical attention or even the most basic care. She died from the effects of long-term neglect, malnutrition, and dehydration. Her father was too busy reading his racing guide to notice she was dead.

Shellay’s mother was sentenced to life without parole; her father got twelve years for manslaughter.
